Dave's mom went into the hospital the day after Christmas and is still in there now. She is having some immune system problems, and of course her heart issues complicate everything else. Dave and I have both been worried about her, but it seems like things are under control and we're hoping she will be released early or mid week next week.
A week ago, we drove to Mount Vernon, Ohio for my good friend Carrie's birthday party. She turned 30 in December (on the 18th) and her husband Daniel threw a party for her in January so she wouldn't suspect. She was really surprised! We ended up staying there overnight and it was so nice to spend some time with the two of them and their kids. They have a really nice house, and we got eat Little Caeser's pizza! Yum, I have not had that in soooo long. They don't have any in Pennsylvania or New York.
The trip up there was pretty eventful. First, leaving Pittsburgh, a rock kicked up and hit my windshield. It created a star that we knew would easily expand and we would need to replace the windshield. Dave had it fixed this Monday, so it's ok and won't expand. Then, we were driving on a two lane road in Ohio. Dave was driving, just following the car in front of us. Not tailgating, but keeping pace and enjoying the scenery. A cop passed coming the other direction, and turned around and pulled US over. Because we have Pa license plates. I'm so glad Dave was the one talking, because I might have been acting irate and complaining about being pulled over when we were following someone else! But Dave was nice, just said he didn't know what speed we were going, he was just following behind the car in front of us. We were sure we were going to get a ticket. But, instead, we got a warning. Which was really nice.
And, I have to say, of the two of us, I would be more likely to get a speeding ticket.
Finally, we were driving along and Dave was watching the scenery a bit. There was a pretty big rock in the road. I saw it, but I assumed Dave also saw it and I didn't want to be a backseat driver, so I kept my mouth shut. Dave didn't see it until it was too late, we ran over it, and got an instant flat. My tires are so expensive - $200 each! We got insurance when the tires were replaced in September, and this is the 2nd flat tire I've had. I'm so glad we got insurance. It has now saved us $400 (minus the insurance cost and the alignment we'll need) in less than 6 months. My tires are also unique, so although we dropped off the flat tire so they can put the new one on the rim, the place still hasn't called to say it's ready. Cross your fingers I don't have any problems, because I don't have AAA or anything like that!
My parents were here to visit after Christmas, through New Year's. We spent New Year's Eve with them, at First Night downtown. It is a family type function, so it is a dry event. Jackie ended up meeting us. To go to some of the events, you needed a voucher (which was free but there were limited amounts) and we couldn't get vouchers for a 2nd event for Jackie. So we ended up at Primanti's to have a beer or two while we waited to meet up with my parents and Allison. My favorite thing there were the bagpipes in the Presbyterian Church. It was beautiful. They had a ball drop downtown, and some fireworks go off at midnight.
We will hopefully finally take down our Christmas decorations today. I guess it's ok- we got them up later than usual, so we're taking them down later than usual. We have just been so busy, between hospital visits and the normal stuff, that we haven't had time to do anything like take down decorations.
