December/Year End Exercise Totals

I made my goal of 550 miles on the bicycle, but barely. I'm definitely tiring down and the first few months of next year are going to be pretty tame exercise-wise for me.  I'm just hoping starting in March that I can get back into a groove, get in shape, and lose some of this baby weight I've gained. :)

Biking totals
2012: 564.7 miles

Running totals
2012: 278.7 miles
2011: 279.04 miles

On the running totals- since I started Couch to 5K in 2011, that total includes walking with the running (in intervals) where in 2012 I tried to break it out more and was running straight more so there isn't much walking in there if any. I'm surprised, honestly, at how close I was to the same mileage for both years. 2011 is when I started running. 2012 was looking good until I got pregnant. ;) And biking, 2012 was the first year I have kept track at all.

35 weeks

35 weeks along and 35 days left to go!

This is really starting to fly by and I'm starting to forget when people ask what week I'm at. I used to know just off the top of my head but now I have to think for a few minutes.

Earlier this week I made myself kind of a nervous wreck. This baby is very active, and I'm used to feeling him move around a lot. At night he didn't move at all and hadn't moved before bed, either, which is pretty unusual. I even tried pushing around on my belly, which will usually get him moving and nothing. I got up and did the things they say to do- empty bladder, have a drink or something with sugar, and lie on your left side concentrating for movement. Still nothing. I was actually considering rolling over and telling Dave I wanted to go to the hospital to make sure everything was ok. And with my tossing and turning, he did eventually wake up. I was about to ship out my doppler to a friend who had a previous miscarriage so that she could use it (she's about 11 weeks along or so right now) but I pulled it out of the box and used it. It's weird- I had such an easy time before finding the heartbeat and you would think I would now because the baby is so much bigger but I had a hard time! I used to know where the heartbeat was but this baby has moved around so much, I wasn't sure. Plus at this point feeling his movement is a lot more reassuring to me than the heartbeat. All was well, though- and he more than made up for the lack of movement the next day.

35 weeks
How many weeks: 35

Size of baby: A coconut and measures 34 cm or 13.4 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is 18 inches. The baby also weighs 2600-2750 grams or 5.7-6.0 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I screwed something up in my weekly reports because I didn't gain 2.5 pounds (I gained less) this week but I'm up overall 27 pounds. (Last week I said I was up 24.5 pounds but I think I screwed up somehow and should have been up more overall than I said last week.) I might also reset it- at my last appointment she changed it so we're actually using my prepregnancy weight instead of the weight I was the day I got my positive test. Which means I'm actually up 23 pounds right now, not 27. Either way they aren't concerned at all.

Maternity Clothes: All maternity clothes now.

Gender: It's a boy!

Movement: Ok he is definitely making me feel like I'm in the movie Alien (or Spaceballs) when the alien pops out of the guy's stomach. I can definitely see movement through my shirt and it's just crazy!! Although he has shifted so he's head down, I still feel it kind of off to the sides and on my upper right side of my stomach, there is a limb there that really jabs me. I joked to Dave that he must have fingernails because sometimes it really hurts and makes me jump! And as I said above I'm kind of getting used to patterns and need to just relax if things aren't the same every day. (I think I was mostly nervous because I felt nothing at all for so long.)

Sleep: He is moving around so much that yes it keeps me up at night and wakes me up in the middle of the night. I still seem to fall asleep really quickly though and with being on vacation at least I'm catching up on sleep finally! It feels amazing. And is making me realize just how tired I've been. Don't ask me how I've been getting up consistently at 5:10am for work. No wonder there have been nights I fall asleep on the couch at 7:30 or 8:00pm!

What I miss: I miss having ab muscles and being able to move around freely. There are times my back just aches and I'm looking forward to feeling normal again, and like myself. And being able to do any exercise I want, including running, and push myself again!

Cravings: No cravings this week- I've been pigging out with it being the holidays. I am definitely more hungry than I have been.

Aversions: None.

Symptoms: Hmm... mostly what I've been describing above. Achy back, very tired, getting bigger and bigger. I don't think I'm swelling yet; I can still fit my wedding rings on easily and stuff. My feet do seem to get that tingly feeling a lot more easily than normal.

Best moment this week: Christmas with the family and getting to sleep in. Not having to get out of bed when the alarms goes off has been so so nice.

Looking forward to: More and more sleep (sense a theme here?) I love that if I want to take a nap, I can.

Christmas Special, 34 weeks 5 days on Christmas
Trying to show the actual bump. 35 weeks

My cat likes to sit on my lap and put her arms around my belly. (This was Christmas morning at our house.)
Her ears are back because of the noise of the camera- she didn't seem to like that.

Pregnancy Collage

Thanks so much to Colleen, who has been telling me to make a progression picture of the bump. I keep telling her yes I need to do that but then I'm too busy/lazy (take your pick) and she took my pictures from each blog post and made a few of these herself. She is really good at manipulating pictures and does that a lot with her own pictures.

Anyway, it's missing the last few weeks because I'm still too lazy to mess around with it but here is week to week progression of my baby bump! It might be a lot bigger if you click on it.

Prayers for a friend

One of my friends, her husband has Stage 4 Melanoma (cancer) and is fighting through it. He has been asked to blog about this and I wanted to pass on his blog posts so far and ask everyone to please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. This is a difficult time for his family and I wish there was more I could personally do but I'm keeping him in my prayers often.

34 weeks

This one is going to be short. I'm really late even writing this- we had a final push at work to try to get some testing done before the holidays (and the team is continuing over the holidays but I have to use vacation, they don't let us carry over). I'm actually writing this at 34 weeks 2-3 days and in the middle of the night because the baby is moving so much I'm not sleeping (but that will need to go in my 35 week post!)

34 weeks 2 days
How many weeks: 34

Size of baby: A butternut squash and measures 33 cm or 13 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is almost 18 inches. The baby also weighs 2350-2550 grams or 5.2-5.6 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 1 pound so I'm up 24.5 pounds.

Maternity Clothes: All maternity clothes now.

Gender: It's a boy!

Movement: He is definitely very active. He did move so his head is down now, yay! I noticed actually right around 33 weeks or 33 weeks 1 day, and the midwife confirmed it at my appointment. (She also showed me where/how he is laying and wow he's already so big, that just made me nervous about him coming OUT.) So now kicks are more up towards the top and in the middle. Although he still seems to shift to the sides but it's more in the corners now. I'm sure I'm not doing a very good job describing this.

Sleep: I have not been sleeping well. One night is ok but it's just because I'm so exhausted. And part of the sleep problem is work- for the most part I've been able to leave work at work but one night I woke up thinking about how to take care of an item and couldn't fall back asleep.

What I miss: Good sleep!

Cravings: I keep saying anything sweet but I'm still thinking I don't really have cravings. I've been loving my peppermint milkshakes from Chick Fil A. YUM.

Aversions: None.

Symptoms: I'm getting bigger... And more achy... and more tired.

Best moment this week: Most of the week has been working and weird hours. But this past weekend was a Christmas party with friends and that was fun. They had it earlier (thank you!) so we were able to be home by my now bedtime of 9pm. As soon as we got home I was in bed and asleep. And one of my presents was these cute handmade burp cloths! I love baby stuff.

Looking forward to: Pretty soon I will be done with work for the year and I am so looking forward to being able to take naps.

33 weeks

This past week was my shower, which was awesome and will get a separate post on its own. We also finished our "having a baby" class at the midwife center and I know now waaaayyy more than I want to about epidurals, spinals, and cesarean sections. The midwife center wants you to be informed, which I agree with, but I really wanted to say lalalala during some of the discussion and was squirming in my chair a little bit.

It was also a rough week. I came down with something that might have been the flu, I'm not sure. It was a really upset stomach, to the point that I actually was watching to call and say I think I'm too dehydrated now (to the point that maybe something needs to be done) and that I might miss both the shower and the class this past weekend. Thank goodness my mom showed up with some Gatorade and my stomach started calming down. But I had a pretty bad 24 hours or so, and lost 5 pounds in the process.

33 weeks 2 days
How many weeks: 33

Size of baby: A durian fruit (whatever that is) and measures 31 cm or 12.2 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is 17.2 inches. The baby also weighs 2100-2250 grams or 4.6-5.0 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 1 pound so I'm up 23.5 pounds.

Maternity Clothes: All maternity clothes now.

Gender: It's a boy!

Movement: Movement in general is one of the best things about being pregnant. It's amazing to feel and know there's a little person in there. With that said, though, when you have an upset stomach, it is agonizing. I was laying on the couch moaning- my stomach already was terrible and I felt like I was going to throw up and the baby kept kicking and kicking, which made it that much worse! At one point I whined to Dave that if I can't handle this I'm never going to be able to handle labor, but my mom reassured me that the baby doesn't move much during labor (as in kicking, etc.). Being sick is bad enough without the added little person pounding away that you can't take off your lap or something like that!

Sleep: I have been feeling pretty nauseous in general and have been having a hard time sleeping. I do fall asleep quickly but then I wake up, most nights, and I just feel sick. I don't know if some of this has been leftover from whatever bug I had right before the shower, but I'm hoping it will lay off soon. I've tried Tums and they don't do a thing for me.

What I miss: Not being so darn tired! :)

Cravings: Anything sweet!

Aversions: None.

Symptoms: Right now my big thing is being super tired.  I don't know if it's a combination of pregnancy and working long hours but I'm having a really hard time with that at the moment.

Best moment this week: The shower! It went off really well and was a lot of fun. I'm very thankful that Dave's sisters were willing to throw one for me and I'm thankful to the friends and family who made it, and missed the ones who didn't.

Looking forward to: It's the start of Christmas season- work parties, a friend's party, etc. I still need to buy presents, oops, but I'm really looking forward to hanging out with our friends and celebrating Christmas.

Glucose Type Tests - Three hour

In this post I talked about the 1 hour test, which I failed. As a result I had to take the three hour test. I can not say enough about the midwife center. I feel so guilty about how much they went out of their way to help me and work with me, but I would never have been able to do this without them.

I took the three hour over a week later. The three hour requires fasting for at least 8 hours beforehand (so basically the night beforehand). When you show up the first blood draw is to check your fasting sugar level. Then they give you a sugary drink with double the sugar of the 1 hour test (so 100g for the 3 hour test), and test your blood sugar level at 1 hours, 2 hours, and 3 hours after drinking the drink to see how your body handles the sugar.

The danger for the baby is, if the mom's body doesn't process the sugar, it gets passed onto the baby and the baby has to try to make up for it. Babies will get too big, gain extra weight, and this can even cause stillbirths. So anyone who has gestational diabetes needs to monitor their diet (limit carbs especially) and have extra monitoring for the remainder of the pregnancy. For me, I would have done the diet and monitoring just fine, but I couldn't even think about having to prick my own finger 4 times a day to test blood sugar levels (not to mention sometimes you have to give yourself an insulin shot if you can't control the diabetes via diet alone).

Anyway, so I was torn on what to eat. Of course they say not to try to "cheat" the test and to just eat normal because you need to know if you have this condition. But I have to admit, I kind of tried. I looked into the diet for GD (gestational diabetes) and followed it for the most part between the 1 hour and 3 hour tests. Basically it's 3 meals a day with 30-45g of carbs each meal and 2-3 snacks daily with 15g carbs for a snack.

The night before the test I had a slice of wheat toast with peanut butter and celery with peanut butter. I wanted something to tide me over, overnight.

We went in bright and early, and I had an Ativan (a large dose). Beforehand I had some extensive discussions with the midwife center to make sure it was ok for the baby and they said it was for one time use. The concern with Ativan is more in the first trimester (could cause genetic problems). In the third trimester, the concern would be that the baby gets addicted but that wouldn't happen from one use of the medicine. I actually thought about not taking it but realized that I needed to try to keep my anxiety down in an attempt to not skew the numbers high if that's what actually happened at the 1 hour test. So I did take it on the car ride in, half an hour before the first (fasting) blood draw.

The first blood draw was tough. I don't think the Ativan kicked in and I know my chin was just shaking up and down. But they limited it to finger pricks and just checking the blood sugar level with one of those glucose monitors. At least it wasn't me having to prick my own finger with that thing. And the advantage was that I heard the numbers as they did each draw.

My first number (fasting) was 88 and passing! I texted a few people who would know what the numbers meant.

I didn't think the Ativan took affect at the time and at the time I was very aware. But Dave had to tell me later what went on because after the first draw I'm pretty fuzzy, I have to admit. The medicine seems to have made me forget a lot.

The second number (1 hour after 100g of sugar) was 167. For double the sugar, that's not that much higher than the 151 I got on my 1 hour test! Again, a passing result. You have to fail at least two out of the four numbers to be diagnosed with GD. So yay, two for two (passing) so far.

The third number (2 hours after the drink) my sugar level was already back to normal at 104. I think normal level is anything below 130. When the nurse said I was already back to normal I asked if we could skip the last blood draw and she said sorry but no.

At that point I decided I wanted to get out of there. I didn't say before but this drink made me feel awful. I spent most of the time lying on the bed and trying not to think about things. I don't remember much, like I said before, and I don't know what Dave was doing or where he was. He had a timer going on his phone for the nurse and she spent quite a bit of time in there talking about us (and no I don't remember these conversations either although at the time I think I was talking a lot too). He said he had it facing so she could see it but I couldn't. I do remember every finger prick although I don't remember extending my hand/finger to her.

So Dave said sure, there was a Steelers store about 2 blocks or so away. I said I needed to use the bathroom first, and that should have been sign #1 that this was a bad idea. I don't know what happened but I couldn't make it to the toilet without Dave's help, haha. I think I fell into the wall or something and when he heard the commotion he came in to help me.

Dave says that I probably looked like a druggie. I was hanging onto him walking the 2 blocks to the store, shuffling my feet and trying not to fall over. I wonder if my eyes were even fully open. ;)  I was also telling him I got 4 things for the baby, for the 4 finger pricks.

I remember looking at onesies in the store, and then we rounded a bend and there was a ramp up. I don't remember much but I know all of a sudden a really sick feeling hit me and in the middle of the store I just sat down on the floor. Several people asked if I was ok and I think I said no. They mentioned where a bathroom was but I couldn't even get up, I felt so faint and nauseous. And yes, I threw up. Big time. That fruit punch drink, all over myself. I vaguely remember taking paper towels and trying to help them clean it up. Dave and a customer took me back to the bathroom and cleaned me up (don't remember that at all) and they asked if I wanted water. I said absolutely not, I'm taking a test, I can't have anything. And I was worried now I'd have to do the three hour all over again but I don't think I said that out loud.

And apparently on my way out I asked them if they sell maternity shirts. They said no but they do have men's shirts and I said no thanks. Those poor people.

When we got back, Dave asked the nurse a hypothetical question. Hypothetically, what would happen if I threw up between the 3rd and 4th blood draws? She said it was ok. At which point in my truth serum state, I said, oh well that wasn't hypothetical. Oy! I mean, I don't lie to people but normally I would keep my mouth shut!

So luckily she said it was ok. I have a feeling that was partially because of how low the 3rd number was.

My 4th and final number was 74, and she said I passed. At that point I relaxed, truly relaxed, for the first time since getting the results from the 1 hour test. And the Ativan then took full effect; I passed out. I don't remember leaving the building. I don't remember the drive home. I don't remember randomly waking up and telling Dave I was hungry (and asking for Chick Fil A for a chocolate peppermint milkshake). I don't remember texting people- just reading texts later was hilarious. I'd been keeping them up to date on numbers until I threw up- then told people I threw up and never texted again until I asked Dave to get me food. That was hours later and I had a bunch of, um are you ok type texts. And my responses there are pretty hilarious too- with typos and just wow. I also don't remember eating the food Dave brought and collapsing into a stupor again.

But, I passed, and didn't have to worry about what I was eating for Thanksgiving itself, and some people got some interesting texts from me.

32 weeks

I got sick with something (upset stomach type bug) and I'm still feeling off now so we didn't take any pictures right around 32 weeks (I'm 32 weeks 2 days as I post this and want to get it up before the shower.) My sister had asked to see some pictures- we usually take them with our regular camera and post them on this blog but she was hoping I could text one to her. So this week's pictures are the ones I took for her, just so I can get a picture up.
31 weeks 5 days
How many weeks: 32

Size of baby: A squash and measures 30 cm or 11.8 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is 16.7 inches. The baby also weighs 1900-2000 grams or 4.2-4.4 pounds. (At my appointment earlier this week though the midwife said he's something over 3 pounds. Don't ask me how she could tell just by feel but that's what she said.)

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 1 pound so I'm up 22.5 pounds.

Maternity Clothes: All maternity clothes now.

Gender: It's a boy!

Movement: We attended the first day or our "having a baby" class and she asked when they move. My response was, pretty much anytime I'm still. I hope that doesn't mean we're in for big trouble and that he's never going to sleep. Although my parents would probably tell me that it serves me right. I don't know how I was as an infant but I know I never really took naps and drove my poor mom nuts. Anyway, he moves a LOT still. And seems to like to do it when I'm sitting in a meeting trying to talk. The worst part is that I can see it- I have no idea if other people can see it as well. He seems to hate me lying down in bed and pushes really hard against the sheets which sometimes makes me jump. And kicks/jabs are getting a lot stronger. Sometimes I can even feel bulges and things like that.

Sleep: I fall asleep quickly but am starting to wake up again to either pee or because my stomach is growling.

What I miss: I'm starting to feel a lot more tired in general. I know this is only going to get worse. I miss being able to eat as much food as I want. If I eat too much I seem to get nauseous.

Cravings: Anything sweet!

Aversions: None.

Symptoms: I'm getting more clumsy. I'm going to blame that on a center of gravity shift. ;) My stomach keeps getting bigger and although I can still get up and down off the floor, it is starting to get harder. Shifting around in bed from one side to the other is also interesting now- I usually pause to psych myself up and then move.

Best moment this week: We went to Late Nite Catechism at City Theatre and it was great. We've seen the Christmas show before but it's always fun.

Looking forward to: My shower is this week! Wow I can't believe it's shower time already...

Glucose Type Tests - One Hour

I decided to write this post for a few reasons. I like reading other people's experiences so I might as well share mine. And I also like to look back at how I felt or how things were. I was just scrolling through pictures/posts on this blog from past weeks and looking at pictures where I thought I looked huge and realizing I barely looked pregnant.

So... without getting into all the anxiety and stress I felt for about a week or so in between the 1 hour and 3 hour tests, I thought I'd get the actual tests and how they went down while I still remember pretty clearly.

The 1 hour test, I honestly thought I was going to pass, in the back of my mind. I've been keeping up (as much as I can) with exercise and I am on the lower end of weight gain. What I report here is actually 4 pounds above what I've actually gained because I started counting it wrong.  But I figure, eh, it's 4 pounds, so I've just continued to report the higher number (and it's also on my charts at the midwife center although one midwife did say that I should have put down pre-pregnancy weight, not my weight on the day of my positive test. Lesson learned for next time.)

I had heard mixed from people about what to eat beforehand. The day/night before I ate as I normally would but didn't want to have carbs/sugar in my body that day. So the morning of the test I had eggs in our cafeteria with a bit of cheese to flavor and a bunch of veggies.  This was at about 7am. The Midwife Center said not to worry about fasting and I thought having food in my stomach would help me handle the drink better. (The drink for the one hour test is 50g of sugar.)

The blood draw was scheduled for 11am with the drink at 10am. So we headed to the midwife center- they said they'd handle this blood draw at their facility because of the needle anxiety.  I figured almost 3 hours after eating would help stabilize if it's better to fast anyways.  So I had the drink; it was orange (no choice for me). I downed it pretty fast. And I had figured I'd be a champ at this. Mom and Dad, stop reading for a sentence or two. When I was younger they had sugar packets for the motel (coffee supplies for the rooms) and I used to down sugar packets. Gross, I know. But I've always had a sweet tooth to the extreme. Anyway, I didn't really have a problem with the drink initially. It was super sweet, and even too sweet for me, but I drank it down just fine.

Dave and I sat in the waiting room and I started feeling sick. I have to admit as soon as I got in my car to drive to the midwife center from work I just started bawling at the prospect of the needle/blood draw and cried the whole way there. I was worried about dehydration and how that would affect things so I asked Dave to get me bottled water at his work and I chugged a lot of that before the drink. Once you drink the drink, no food or water for that hour.

Because of that, I kept having to pee. And the drink made our baby very active. He seems to really kick my internal organs and was hitting both my bladder and something else that just started making me feel sick. About 45 minutes in, I went to the bathroom (again, kept doing that over and over) and I actually threw up some in my mouth. It was terrible. A mixture of eggs and that sugary drink. I swallowed it back and didn't say a word because I didn't want to have to go through this again. If you throw up because of the drink they give you the equivalent amount of sugar via jelly beans but it would have had to be done a different day. (Later I did admit to the midwife about it and she said that small amount wouldn't affect the test results.) But from that point on I felt awful, and just physically sick.

They took me to the birthing room that we would prefer if it's not already occupied when I go into labor. That was nice- we got to really check it out and be in there. She used an IV type thing I guess to draw the blood. I never watch and was leaning on Dave the entire time, partly nerves and partly feeling sick. I guess at one point my blood completely stopped flowing and she had to flick my wrist to try to get it moving (it didn't). As things progressed I felt worse and worse, and soon my ears were ringing and I felt like I was going to pass out. That's actually not anything that has ever happened to me as a result of the phobia so I'm blaming that on the sugar and feeling sick. So I have to admit I started moaning or something and saying I was going to pass out. The nurse had pity on me and I lied back, while she tried to decide if she had enough blood. She ended up taking the vials upstairs to ask and thank goodness they said it was ok. She also put a cold washcloth on my head to try to help me feel better, and I just lay in the bed for awhile, I'm not sure how long. When I did feel better, I sat up and had some water and a granola bar. I also realized that my clothes were soaked because I had broken out in a sweat.

So yeah, not the most pleasant experience in the world for me. But even with that, the nurse was amazing and the midwife center did what they could to make me more comfortable and try to help.

This got long so I decided to break it up into two posts- and will post the 3 hour test separately.

The test was on a Friday and I got a call the following Tuesday around lunchtime. As soon as I saw caller ID and that it was the Midwife Center I knew they were calling to say I failed and that's when my week of anxiety and stress started. My number was 151 and they wanted it under 130. I will say, after the fact. Based on my numbers for the 3 hour and discussions, I think that the number was elevated because of anxiety. That can elevate cortisol levels, which affects your sugar level. So if I ever do this again somehow I need to find a way to relax and hopefully avoid having to take the 3 hour.

November Exercise Totals

I can tell more and more that I'm tiring really easily. Two more months of pregnancy left; my goal is to keep working out as I can and be ok with slowing down. Looking at how few times I walk, I should probably work on that. I did walk a 5K on Thanksgiving day, and I made my goal of over 500 miles on the bike for the year. I don't think 600 miles is a realistic goal at this point. I'll just work out as I can and see what I get to. I'm thinking 550 might be realistic but I'm not going to push too hard, either.

31 weeks

I get weekly email updates with what's going on with the baby. This week it says he's getting ready for another growth spurt. And that all the moving around is a good sign that he's healthy. And he's certainly moving a lot in there!!

Some people have asked about labor and what I'm thinking about that. I have heard over and over that people have dreams about having the baby (as in scary or weird dreams) but I still haven't, which to me means I'm not even really thinking about it subconsciously. I don't see that as a bad thing though. If I do think about it, I'll probably worry more than anything else. And worrying isn't going to do me any good. I mean, what's going to happen is going to happen and this is something that I can't even start to imagine how it's going to feel. Of course it's going to hurt but at the end I will have a baby. And of course I get nervous thinking about needles, but with the midwife center, if things go smoothly (and I know that's not up to me either) there is at least a chance I can do this without needles. On the other side, though, if I decide I do want needles (like for an epidural) then that option is also there. I have a lot of options open to me, depending on how things go. And for me, some of the needle/doctor type aversion is more about anticipation. I handle things a lot better on the fly (although yeah I still have the needle issues even there but not quite as bad). So when the time comes we'll just see how things go and do what needs to be done.

Speaking of labor, though, contractions. Specifically, Braxton-Hicks. I haven't felt them at all yet. I don't know if it's because I try to stay really hydrated, it's my first baby, or... what. But they told me not to worry if I'm not feeling them.

I ran across this link and thought it was funny. Advice for first time moms.

31 weeks
We took this picture at the end of the day and some days I feel bigger than others. This felt like a big day. :) Definitely a belly there though!

How many weeks: 31

Size of baby: A pineapple and measures 29 cm or 11.4 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is 16 inches. The baby also weighs 1700-1800 grams or 3.75-4 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I more than made up for the loss last week and gained 3.5 pounds. Overall I'm up 21.5 pounds.

Maternity Clothes: All maternity clothes now.

Gender: It's a boy!

Movement: Kicks are getting stronger and stronger, and my belly button has popped out! Speaking of that, the last time I checked, I did still have an innie belly button when I am lying down. But it's definitely pushing out when I'm standing up. And he's moving pretty actively as I sit here and type this. At work I need to lean back in my chair sometimes- especially at meetings. He must feel squished when I lean forward because that seems to start some real kicking.

Sleep: I'm sleeping pretty well. Sometimes I don't move much at all because it's getting more and more uncomfortable to roll over. It feels like I have lost all of my abdominal muscles. Pre-pregnancy I was one of those people who just laid in bed for awhile waiting to fall asleep. Pretty much all the time right now, I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow. It's a nice feeling.

What I miss: I think what I miss the most right now is running. We walked a 5K on Thanksgiving (at 30 weeks exactly) and I was still kind of itching to run it. I do think if I wanted to I could still run but with the weather getting cooler and no workout clothes (running/wicking wise) that fit; specifically pants, I don't think it's really going to happen again. I say that though but if I'm itching enough to get out there and run I might find a way.

Cravings: I still just want a lot of sugar and sweets.

Aversions: None.

Symptoms: I'm just in general feeling bigger and some days are worse than others. On the worse days I ask Dave to help me with things like putting on my socks. And rolling over, etc., or anything that uses my abs is harder. I can still get down on the floor and back up, but I can tell my balance is a bit off because my center of gravity has shifted. Also, I've never had heartburn before so maybe this is just heartburn but I'm getting nauseous. The first time was in the car on the way back from NY (thank goodness no more longish car rides until post baby- 5 hours in the car was pretty uncomfortable by the end). In the car, I figured it was just motion sickness but it was bad enough that I had a paper bag I was eyeing up. But it's also woken me up several nights and I feel like I'm about to puke. You know, the feeling when if you would just puke and get it over with, you'd feel better? That's what it is. Could this be heartburn at all?

Best moment this week: We had a good time with family over Thanksgiving but were back a day early and it was really nice to just relax and do nothing for a full day at our house.

Looking forward to: December and the Christmas season. We aren't decorating much at our house this year because if I'm not up to helping Dave take it down I don't want him doing that by himself. But it's getting us closer to holding our baby and is just special this year.

Pie and Glove 5K

On Thanksgiving Day, we were in Corning, NY where I grew up and where my parents and brother still live.   I really wanted to do a 5K and one of my friends from there told me about the Pie and Glove 5K. I guess my uncle, who is a huge runner, usually runs it but he was out of town at his son's so I once again missed a race with him. That's still on my running bucket list! There is no way I can keep up, but someday...

My parents and Dave also signed up for the 5K. I did originally plan on walking it together, but oops adrenaline got the best of me.
Waiting to start
We started out at the back to be nice to all the runners. We got there early to get a parking spot at the high school and surprisingly there were still spots at the beginning of the race. It was a good sized race for the area; over 1000 people, and I guess they all parked further away. We got our bibs and were trying to figure out what to run in. I think it was in the 40's when it started, and since we were just walking I had on a pair of cotton pants, a wicking t-shirt, and a sweatshirt over that. I also decided at the last minute to throw a hat on so my ears wouldn't get cold.

When we started I guess I kinda took off walking at a fast pace. I do like to walk, and I do walk fast, so I didn't really mean to. My mom stayed with me, though, and I thought out of the 4 of us she would probably have the slowest pace. So I figured if she was with me, we were at a good pace. (Later she told me it was kind of fast.) I was surprised when I looked back that Dave and my dad were a bit behind, because I thought I was going pretty slowly. (They all told me later that I wasn't. Oops.)

My mom and I were talking, and I don't even know about what, so I wasn't really paying attention to anything around me. We didn't get very far before the lead runner was coming back, which I'm definitely not used to! We cheered the first few runners on and kept walking. With our talking, I also missed the 1 mile marker. Oh, I forgot to mention that I left my Garmin watch at my parents'. I'm such a nerd, I depend on that thing, even for walking, and was really disappointed about that. So I don't have any numbers or mile breakdowns and really have no idea how fast we were going.

My sister from Savannah called and my mom handed me the phone, which apparently slows me down. I did blame her for slowing down but I guess I can't talk on the phone and walk. At that point, my Dad and Dave caught up to us. We hung up the phone, and my Dad and I kind of looked at each other and picked up the pace. I was hoping my Mom and Dave wouldn't mind (but I admit it was kind of mean). We circled around in Denison Park and kept talking about passing the next walking group we saw ahead of us.

When we hit mile 2, I started talking about running. Dad said he can't run from the front door to the mailbox and I told him he could. I was really itching to run, even though I didn't really have on running clothes. But we kept walking, picking up the pace, and passing people. That was really fun.

I also had my first on a race course- getting cut off by an old woman shuffling across the street in her slippers. I have no idea what she was doing but she didn't seem to care that a race was ongoing and cut right in front of us. I just laughed.

The race began and ended at the high school and there was a bridge to cross over. It was the only "hill" of the course. We got within sight of it, and I started talking about running again. I knew that was about .2-.3 miles from the top of the bridge and I tried to convince my Dad what a good idea it would be to just run the end. I even said that the downhill from the bridge would give us a push to get going. He still seemed a little reluctant. But, as we got to the top, a daughter rounded back to get her parents and was telling them to run it out. So they started running, I looked at my Dad, and we started running. Thank you, competitive Thurkins gene, haha! I don't really know if that's what sparked him on, but he did it!

We rounded a corner, saw the 3 mile marker, and I tried to just chat him up the rest of the way. We crossed the finish line and the clock said 50:XX. I didn't remember what the seconds were but I said we might have beat 50 minutes. My Dad thought we definitely did (and when we got the results, yes we did! 48:47).

We got water at the end (no food, I was a bit disappointed with that, and HUNGRY) and turned around to cheer on Dave and my Mom. We did get to see them cross the finish line and didn't embarrass them too much.
My dad and me at the end (finish line is behind us)
A couple of things I didn't mention in the recap.

It was in my hometown and I did see some friends from high school. That was really neat. I also saw some people I recognized but couldn't remember the names of. I should remember this and try to actually meet up with some of my friends if I do something like this again! I never really thought I'd see anyone I'd know.

The end is kind of annoying when everyone is else is done. We were trying to run the last .2ish miles and there were people milling about and walking back on the course. I found that pretty annoying. I know I'm usually done closer to 30 minutes so I don't see it, but at the last 5K I walked we didn't have this problem at all. So runners, just keep that in mind at the end! There are still some people out there working their butts off and there were still a decent number of walkers. I'm definitely going to pay more attention in the future.

I'm proud of my parents and Dave. But especially of my Dad. I really didn't think he would run any of it and he did. I love "racing" with my family. My 5K in Savannah with my sister was one of my favorites and I can't wait to do it again.

30 weeks!

First, wow! I can't believe I only have 10 weeks left until my due date. 10 WEEKS?! Dave and I are both at the point that we really, really are excited about holding this baby in our arms.

I have great, outstanding news. I passed my 3 hour glucose test. I know that it's hard to understand but I couldn't even fathom the concept of having GD and having to prick my own finger 4 times a day. It's just something I am not physically capable of. I've made progress with my phobia but... I won't go into a whole lot about all that unless someone wants to hear it. And I kept feeling for sure that I had GD. Not that I wanted to take that 3 hour test, either. And the test was pretty hard for me.

30 weeks 1 day
And I meant to post this earlier, especially since my last post I was pretty upset but I wanted to include the picture. We were out of town, at my parents (which is why the background looks different) and although this picture was taken last Friday, I didn't get it onto a computer until we got home.

How many weeks: 30

Size of baby: A cucumber and measures 28 cm or 11 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is 15.75 inches. The baby also weighs 1500-1600 grams or 3.3-3.5 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I lost (wrong way, I know) 1 pound so I'm down 18 pounds total. It's been a really, really rough week for me. Well, a little longer than a week. I'm sure I will more than make this up with Thanksgiving dinner alone.

Maternity Clothes: All maternity clothes now. My only complaint is jeans. I don't have a pair that's comfortable.

Gender: It's a boy!

Movement: He is moving a whole lot, especially at night. The night before my 3 hour test, Dave was so nice and kept his arm around me as much as he could so that I felt comforted. And the next morning he commented how much the baby moves. Yep, that's normal! I'm also glad Dave was able to feel him that much. Also, I swear once or twice that the baby has actually petted our cat. It's the weirdest feeling. My cat still cuddles up on my stomach and purrs, and now the baby, I wish I could see what's going on inside there. It feels like those massage chairs, where something sticks out, but it's from the inside. And it's right where the cat is sitting! Some of this stuff is just really cool (although it does feel a bit creepy as well).

Sleep: I have not been sleeping well at all but it's been because of stress/worry about the 3 hour test and possible GD. I'm going to be sleeping a whole lot better now, I know it. At least for a little bit, my back, etc. isn't even bothering me. I'm just crashing.

What I miss: Honestly I'm starting to miss having my own body. I think it's probably too early for that and I do not want this baby to be premature but it will be nice to hold him in my arms and see Dave experiencing this as well.

Cravings: SWEETS! I cut them out entirely and after the test asked Dave for a chocolate peppermint milkshake from Chick Fil A. I wasn't able to finish it but mmmmmmm. I'm going to try to eat a bit healthier in general from now on but not having anything for a week or so was getting really hard. Especially with all the commercials and stuff on tv.

Aversions: None.

Symptoms: I have been so preoccupied this past week that I can't think of much specific. Got the big belly there- although I'm getting comments about my belly and everyone is surprised when I say how far along I am. They think I'm more in the middle of the pregnancy. I did ask at my appointment about that (same day as the three hour) and she did the measurement and said I'm just fine. Phew. Maybe it's just my height.

Best moment this week: The passing score on the three hour test. She told me the numbers each hour and all 4 were good.

Looking forward to: The Thanksgiving holiday and finally being able to relax a little bit. I'm back to enjoying pregnancy again.

29 weeks

This post is going to be short. Unfortunately I failed the 1 hour glucose test. In my head, I understand that's not the end of the world but with my needle phobia I am feeling paralyzed, discouraged, and pretty devastated right now. I still have to take the three hour test but stress affects things and I'm feeling so stressed/anxious that I just know I'm going to fail the three hour as well. And if I started to talk about it this would turn into a huge venting post. I am not going to fill in most of the items because honestly I am just feeling so down right now.

How many weeks: 29

Size of baby: A butternut squash and measures 27 cm or 10.6 inches, crown to rump length. Head to toe is 15 inches. The baby also weighs 1300-1400 grams or 2.8-3.1 pounds.

Total Weight Gain/Loss: I gained 1 pound so I'm up 19 pounds. I have to admit I was higher earlier in the week but since getting the news I failed the glucose test I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping and eating and dropped back down again.

MNF - Steelers!!!

Last night I went to the Steelers game with John. John has season tickets and Dave is actually going to the Sunday night game against Baltimore with him next week.

I found out that being pregnant has really affected me. I took a vacation day from work today and I'm so glad I did. I literally dragged myself out of bed at 11am, and for only two reasons:
1. Dave texted to say he left his wallet and I felt bad and thought I might be able to hurry and take a shower to meet him for lunch and get him his wallet. But after talking to him he was going to borrow $ from a coworker so I turned lazy.
2. I need to go to sleep tonight at a decent hour which for me is now 9pm at the latest, so I will be ok at work tomorrow.

I did have a lot of fun at the game, though! I'm just paying for it today.

The weather at the game was interesting. It started out around 60 when I drove downtown to meet Dave and John for dinner. But it was raining off and on. And it was supposed to drop down to 29 by the end of the night with a possibility for snow. How do you dress like that? And especially when you don't fit your normal clothes?

I looked like a snowman. I felt like a snowman. But I was for the most part fairly warm and John lent me a Columbia water proof jacket he had in his car, extra. Dave and I bought a $2 poncho but I didn't end up using it.

Before the game, getting out rain gear to wear
I wore my Uncle Jeff's Steelers jacket to the game. Uncle Jeff passed away in late August of this year unexpectedly. He was there in spirit, through me though! And his jacket turned out to be waterproof AND warm, which was awesome.
With my big belly, anything in the pockets bulged out, haha.

John and me before the game
In honor of Veteran's Day (Thank you all Veterans, past and present), they had cards in most of the seats. There were actually instructions on the back and a slit to see through. John and I were testing them out before the salute.
John with his cue card

With my cue card
Since it was cold and rainy out, I pocketed my cell phone for most of the game. Dave kept sending us updates- sometimes when they're doing an instant replay, etc. the people watching tv know a lot more than those in the stands. John was getting them too and let me see what Dave was saying. (I had a lot of texts when I finally pulled my phone out.)

Rusted Root during halftime
I have to say, though, that although the Steelers one the game they got lucky and didn't deserve it. A win is a win but that was a hard game to watch. I always say good teams overcome bad calls. I hate being a team that depends on the refs to win the game! I hope we do a lot better against Baltimore on Sunday.

In memory

I feel compelled to post this just because I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

One year ago today, we said goodbye to our second baby/pregnancy. I wish I could be holding that baby in my arms right now, sitting at this computer, but it just wasn't meant to be. I hope our first two babies are up in Heaven, playing together. There have been days that that's the only thought that keeps me moving. Even a year later.

I know it's a popular song on Christian radio, but especially lately Praise You In This Storm by Casting Crowns keeps coming on the radio. That's really what prompted me to even post about this day that I will be remembering and praying.

Our band plays Praise You In This Storm and I handle it fine when we're playing it but I can't sing along to the whole thing when it comes on the radio. I end up stopping because I'm tearing up too much. I wonder if that will every fully go away. This song has so much meaning to me and has really become a reminder to me of both of our losses.

Verse 1:
I was sure by now
God You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say "Amen", and it's still raining

As the thunder rolls
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

Chorus:
And I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
And every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

Verse 2:
I remember when
I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to you
And you raised me up again
My strength is almost gone
How can I carry on
If I can't find You

But as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

Chorus

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth

Chorus x2

We love you and miss you, baby. We learned we were expecting you on September 26, 2011. We lovingly nicknamed you Little Monster. Your estimated due date was June 5, 2012 and we lost you at 10 weeks 1 day on November 9, 2011. You will always, always hold a place in my heart.
