I think, for me, more of his growth has been in how he looks to me. I watch him play right now and he just is starting to look so much older. His hair is growing in, he's standing up a lot, and just the way he looks around he looks more like a person and not a baby.

| He really wanted to get that sticker off. And we really wanted to distract him. |
Neil also lets you know if he doesn't want to do something. He is very good at pushing hands away now and only does something if he wants to.

We went to my parents' for Christmas and I am very happy with how Neil is around other people. We need to keep showing him pictures of the rest of the family though just to make sure he remembers who is who. But he especially took to my sister Megan, which was funny. And seemed to really be comfortable with pretty much all of my family.
Speaking of Christmas, what a blessing he is! He can open presents, definitely. It takes some time but he rips off paper a bit at a time and then he notices that there's something in there and gets excited. It makes me wish we had taken some video of this.
Food wise we do more finger foods than purees now and when I make food it tends to be finger foods instead of purees (I just skip the puree step). I made a sweet potato recipe (scalloped sweet potatoes) that anybody could eat for Christmas dinner and I had to mess with the ingredients but it was tasty if you like sweet potatoes.
We're still on breast milk although I'm going to start scaling back the month of January. I'm going to drop from 2 pumps at work to 1. I'll still pump in the morning before work. This could be touch and go for a bit. I found out that daycare has consistently been dumping milk, which is honestly heartbreaking. If I had known, we could have adjusted. That's why I'm upset. I just wish they had told me. Meanwhile I've been sitting and pumping for 20 minutes at a time at work just to get every drop I can. It's NOT fun. The other thing daycare is doing is giving him solid food before milk, which is making him full. They want him to use a bottle to fall asleep for his afternoon nap. I have finally given up on asking them to do milk first. I don't want to come across as super controlling but it does bother me. There are two girls there who are about a month older than Neil, though, and I do know that neither of them are on breast milk anymore (and haven't been for months), and when they eat Neil is opening his mouth to eat. I guess this is a disadvantage of daycare. (There are advantages though- including him learning sign language, being more comfortable around different people, etc.)
We went through a biting spell with Neil. I am ashamed to admit that I pushed Neil pretty hard away from me one time. It was a gut reaction. I've heard the advice to push their face into you so that you can't breathe, but that would just get them to let go. My problem isn't him biting and holding, it's just biting for a second and letting go. It still hurts! And the day I had my automatic reaction he had bitten me 3 times already on one side. I felt so so guilty after but at the same time he hasn't done it again. And I'm hesitating admitting this in public because it is not the way I wanted to react, pulling him away really hard. But I did it. Once.

Some stats that I haven't typically included (this is for you, Colleen, when you get here, ha!):
Size 3 diapers
Size 9-12 clothing except Gerber. And he can even fit some 6-9 clothing now.

We are so proud of Neil! He was so much fun! Hope he settles back into routine very soon for you!
ReplyDeleteHe did settle back into the routine. I hope this isn't a sign that he doesn't travel well though.
DeleteFunny I started reading the line about stats and got excited then you mentioned me. hahaha. So I started an excel file with different babies I know and ages and sizes they are wearing or were if they posted them places just to get an idea what everyone else is doing and how everyone is really really different.
ReplyDeleteHaha sorry I didn't do this before and I didn't write that kind of stuff down so I can't even tell you what it was.
DeleteIt is very different. There is a baby who was born in August and he's almost the same size as Neil, which is just insane. So it ranges all over the place.
I like how all the sizes are different.
DeleteElla is currently still in newborn onesies even though she's over 8 lbs and that's usually the transition weight. 0-3 month stuff is still way too wide.
A friend just posted on fb that her son is 6 months old and the same height and weight she was at 1 year. she just found her baby book to see that.
Hmmm I do have my baby books with height and weight. Although boys and girls are measured differently so that's not really a fair comparison. (They have different charts.) I know Neil was in newborn for at least a few weeks.
Deleteyea boys are bigger but still 6 month difference is still different. my mom has my charts. If you have those you could compare percentiles. I know Ella is above 50th percentile for height but only because the doctor mentioned "you can thank dad for that one" so it stuck in my memory. Her next appointment is for 2 months. I will have to get her length on my own. I've been getting weight. Dave has some app he got that he can put in the stats and it will plot it on the chart. I haven't done that yet.
DeleteI think I did some of my painted shirts too close to the side seams so they won't look as good on her. I'm worried.
Ella won't wear long sleeves or she's fussy now. Dave said next week it'll be colder so maybe we'll get her in some newborn long sleeve again so they get some more wears out of them. I think she has 2 she hasn't worn yet. I was trying to get pics of her in all the clothes since some were gifts but I still missed some because she got pee on them prior to a picture.
I can't believe he's almost 1!!!! It's so exciting! As much as babies change in that first year, I think the 2nd is even more! It's like they really become a "person". Neil is SO freaking cute. I can't leave that out since it's always so true! :)
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine them changing more the 2nd year! And thanks, he is such a happy baby so that helps with the cuteness I think. ;)
